When to Toss your Make-up?

Today I am sharing some sad news for other makeup hoaders like myself. There comes a time in every makeup product’s life when you need to say goodbye to it. Although it might sometimes be very tempting to hold on to your favourite lipsticks and mascara’s but in the long run its not the smartest thing to do.  Cosmetics might not always come with the expiration date but they do have one and since you are applying makeup on your skin you need to be very careful of what you apply. I’d suggest you sit down every 3 months if you don’t have time often and toss the makeup that has been lying there for so long.

Today I am sharing a little guide with you which will help you remember when to toss your makeup.

Before I go on ranting about the age of each category of products, I am going to provide you with some basic tips.

Some makeup products indicate the “use by” time limit. One must remember that this “use by” is not from the time you purchase the product but from the time you open that product. The most important rule to remember is that the more the moisture in your makeup product, the faster it will expire. Lastly, do not share your makeup with your friends and family, bacteria travels really fast.

Any product in a pencil form i.e. a lip liner, kohl, eye liner, brow products etc. usually last for about one to two years. The pencils that one needs to sharpen last the longest as every time you sharpen them, you start with a new base but this does not mean that they last for your entire life. The minute they become dry, it goes right into that bin!

B.  Lipstick and Lip Glosses

Lipsticks and Lip Glosses no matter what brand they are from last around one year. I know we all use them for much longer; I am guilty of that too. But if you are using it for long then  try to sanitise it often. Although I’d suggest to switch them up every year. Also, wouldn’t you want to try the new colours in the market?

C.  Powders

Any product in the powder form i.e. compact’s, setting powder, eye-shadows, bronzers, highlighters etc. last for a good 2 years. These are the form of makeup products that usually last the longest.

D.  Mascara and Liquid Eyeliners

Mascara and Liquid Eyeliners are the products with the shortest life span. They should not be used beyond 3 to 6 months. Every time you use a mascara, you pump air into it and it causes the mascara to dry and also builds a home for bacteria and same is the case with eyeliners. I have heard stories from Makeup Artist Ambika Pillai about how she had client’s turning up to her without eyelashes or with white dotted eye lashes because they used an expired mascara. So be careful and remember when  to toss your mascara. If you forget then take a permanent market and write the date on the mascara of when you opened it.

E. Foundations and Concealers

If you are someone like me who doesn’t wear foundation every day, your foundation must last you years. But it’s time to toss them. If you have any foundations and concealer’s lying with you for more than a year then it’s time to throw them. Every foundation and concealer lasts for maximum a year to a year and a half. If you use expired foundations and concealer’s it’s only going to cause you to break out and none of us want that.

I hope this post was useful for you and inspires you to go clean your makeup stash!
